Code and Ethics
All certified rehabilitation counselors subscribe to
a code of professional ethics, which directs the practice
of rehabilitation counseling. The code is based upon
five principles:
- Autonomy: To honor the right to
make individual decisions
- Beneficence: To do good to others
- Nonmaleficence: To do no harm
to others
- Justice: To be fair and give equally
to others
- Fidelity: To be loyal, honest
and keep promises to others
The code consists of enforceable standards that address
the counseling relationship; confidentiality; advocacy
and accessibility; professional responsibility; relationships
with other professionals; evaluation, assessment and
interpretation; teaching, training and supervision;
research and publication; electronic communication
and
emerging applications; business practices; and resolving
ethical issues.
